Converting Addon domain to its own cPanel account

Published on : June 16, 2018 by Evangela Marium

It’s been quite some time that cPanel introduced this feature. To be precise they introduced in from cPanel WHM 58 onwards (current version is 68). I haven’t got the time to get a hold on this until last day and got straight away impressed with it. As a web hosting support tech I have come across clients asking for this same feature and happy to have this feature finally come to a realization.

If you have enough basic knowledge on how to use cPanel WHM then the process would be pretty much straightforward. Just log in to your WHM and navigate to Home >> Transfers >> Convert Addon Domain to Account section and get done with it.

Here I will try to provide the steps to do this with help of some screenshots.

Note: I would advise you to create a full cPanel backup of the account before the conversion. Just in case if anything goes wayward, we can restore the complete account from this backup.

1. Login to WHM

Login to WHM and navigate to Home >> Transfers >> Convert Addon Domain to Account section. The page simply lists all the Addon domains present in the server. You will need to select the particular Addon domain for which you want its own account, from this list. Once you find your Addon domain, click on “Convert” button.

2. Username and Package

In this page, you will have to set the username and the package for the particular cPanel account. If you already have a package created you can assign that to the new account. If not the default package will be automatically assigned.

Preserve Account Ownership : You can check this option to ensure that the reseller account that owned the Addon domain will also be own this new account. However, this option will only be available if you do the conversion as root and not a reseller.

3. Configuration

In this page, you will have 3 options.

  • Copy contents of document root directory

  • Copy custom VirtualHost include files

  • Copy the installed SSL certificate

Copy contents of document root directory

This will copy all the contents of the document root of Addon domain to the new account.

Copy custom VirtualHost include files

This option is to copy the contents of the VirtualHost entry in web server configuration over to new account.

Copy the installed SSL certificate

This option is to copy over the SSL certificate of the Addon domain to a new account. This option won’t be available if the Addon domain doesn’t have any SSL installed.

4. DNS

If you have any custom DNS records like TXT or CNAME records for the Addon domain you will have to check the option “Move Custom DNS Records” in this page to get them in the new account.

5. Email

This page is for copying over the domains Email accounts, forwarders, and autoresponders to the new account.

You will have 4 options on this page.

Copy email accounts

Select this option to move all the email accounts of the addon domain. It will also list the total number of email accounts under this Addon domain.

Move email forwarders

Select this option to copy any email forwarders you have created. In this case, I don’t have any forwards, so the option is greyed out for me.

Copy autoresponders

Select this option to copy the autoresponders you have set for the email accounts under your Addon domain. In this case, I don’t have any autoresponders, so the option is greyed out for me.

Copy webmail data

This will copy all webmail data like your Address book, signatures, calendars etc.

6. Database

You can copy the database of the Addon domain to new account from this page. The page will list all the databases owned by the original account of this Addon domain and you can select the database which is used by the Addon domain to copy it over to a new account.

There are two options for the database. You can either copy the database to a new account or move it to a new account. To choose between them, you can click on “Configure” in the MySQL Database section and then select “Move” or “Copy” option under “How do you want to transfer your MySQL Databases?” section.

Copying database will require additional disk space. This option can be considered if you need an old copy of the database. I would prefer “Move” as we already have a backup ready.

Next, select the database user which you want to move to a new account. Again I would prefer to move database and user against copying them. If you move a database user and not a database to which they have access, the user will lose all access to that database.

7. Subaccounts

This page will allow you to copy over the subaccounts of Addon domain like FTP account, Webdisk etc to a new account. You will have two options

  • Copy FTP accounts

  • Copy Web Disk accounts

Copy FTP accounts

This option will copy all the FTP accounts owned by Addon domain to a new account.

Copy Web Disk accounts

This will copy the Web disk account of Addon domain to new account

8. Conversion

Now “Start Conversion” to begin the process of Addon domain to cPanel account conversion.

Note: You can check the “Conversion History” to check the details and progress of conversion.

Conclusion

cPanel as always amuse me with the new features and integrations they bring forward. Addon Domain to cPanel account conversion is one such feature and will be a ton useful for all the users out there. Kudos to cPanel team for this.
